When your NDIS plan is approved, you can feel like you've been handed a treasure map without a key. Support coordination exists to help you make sense of your plan, find the right providers and actually get the support you need in place. This guide explains what it is, who can benefit and how to access it in Western Sydney.

What is NDIS Support Coordination?

Support coordination is a funded NDIS support where a qualified coordinator helps you:

Understand your NDIS plan — what each funding category means and how it can be used

Find and connect with providers — identifying the right supports for your needs and goals

Set up service agreements — helping you negotiate and establish arrangements with each provider

Coordinate multiple supports — making sure all your providers are working together effectively

Prepare for plan reviews — helping you gather evidence and advocate for the right level of funding

Resolve problems — when a support is not working or a provider is not meeting expectations

Support Coordination vs Specialist Support Coordination

There are two levels of support coordination:

Support Coordination

Suitable for most NDIS participants. A support coordinator helps you implement your plan, find providers and navigate the NDIS system. They are usually funded under the Capacity Building — Support Coordination category.

Specialist Support Coordination

For participants with complex needs — including significant behavioural, mental health or risk-related challenges. Specialist support coordinators have advanced qualifications and experience managing complex, multi-agency support arrangements. This is funded at a higher rate under the same category.

Support Coordination vs Plan Management

These are two different supports that are often confused:

Plan management is about the money — a plan manager handles payments to providers, processes claims and sends you budget statements. It is a financial administration service.

Support coordination is about the support — a coordinator helps you find providers, implement your plan and work towards your goals. It is a relationship and navigation service.

Many participants have both. They are complementary, not competing.

Do I Need a Support Coordinator?

Not every NDIS participant needs a support coordinator — but many benefit from one, especially:

New participants who are navigating the NDIS for the first time

Participants with complex needs who require multiple providers working together

Participants who have had difficulties with previous providers or plan implementation

Plan review periods — when you need help gathering evidence and preparing for your review meeting

Times of significant change — moving house, leaving school, losing a carer, or a significant change in health or circumstances

If you feel confident navigating the NDIS independently and have straightforward support needs, you may not need a support coordinator. But if your plan feels overwhelming or your support is not properly in place, it is worth having one.

How to Get Support Coordination in Your NDIS Plan

To have support coordination funded, you need to demonstrate at your planning meeting that you need help implementing your plan. Strong evidence includes:

Complex or multiple support needs that require coordination across several providers

A history of difficulty accessing or maintaining appropriate supports

A significant life change such as leaving school, transitioning from hospital, or changes in living arrangement

A recommendation from your LAC or planner based on their assessment of your situation

If you were not funded for support coordination in your current plan but feel you need it, speak with your LAC about a plan review or unscheduled plan review.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can I choose my own support coordinator?

Yes. Like all NDIS supports, you have choice and control over who provides your support coordination. You can change support coordinators at any time with reasonable notice.

Can my support coordinator also be my provider?

Generally, no — there is a conflict of interest in having the same organisation coordinate your supports and deliver them. The NDIS has rules around this. Your support coordinator should be independent of your other providers where possible.

How much does support coordination cost?

Support coordination is funded at rates set by the NDIS Pricing Arrangements and Price Limits, which are updated annually. Check the current NDIS Support Catalogue for the latest figures. These costs come from your Capacity Building budget, not your Core Supports.
