One of the most important — and most enjoyable — supports the NDIS funds is community participation. Getting out, connecting with others, building skills and experiencing your community are fundamental to a good quality of life. For many participants, NDIS community access support makes the difference between social isolation and a rich, connected life.

This guide covers what the NDIS funds for community activities and social participation, plus local options for participants across Western Sydney.

What is NDIS Community Access Support?

NDIS community access (officially called Assistance with Social, Economic and Community Participation) is funded support that enables participants to get out into their community and take part in social, recreational, educational and civic activities.

Support can be provided one-on-one or in small groups, and covers both the assistance to participate and any transport required to get there (where transport is included in your plan).

What Does the NDIS Fund for Community Activities?

The NDIS can fund a wide range of community activities, depending on how they relate to your disability and your plan goals. Examples include:

Social and recreational activities

Attending local events, visiting parks, going to the cinema, eating out, playing sport, joining hobby groups and clubs, visiting galleries and museums, attending concerts or festivals.

Fitness and health

Going to the gym, swimming, participating in adapted sports programs, yoga, walking groups — where your disability affects your ability to participate independently.

Education and skill-building

Attending TAFE or community college, joining cooking or art classes, participating in community workshops, developing communication and social skills.

Volunteering and civic participation

Support to volunteer, participate in community groups, attend council meetings or engage in activities that contribute to the community.

Shopping and errands

Support to shop independently, manage finances at a bank, attend appointments and carry out daily errands where your disability makes these challenging alone.

What Activities Are Available in Western Sydney?

How is Community Access Funded in an NDIS Plan?

Community access supports are funded under two categories:

Core Supports — Assistance with Social, Economic and Community Participation: for the day-to-day cost of support workers accompanying you to activities

Capacity Building — Social Community and Civic Participation: for supports focused on building skills and independence over time, so you can eventually participate with less or no support

When discussing your plan, be specific about the activities you want to participate in and why they matter to your goals. The more clearly you can connect community participation to your wellbeing, independence and long-term goals, the more likely your plan will include adequate funding.
